The Lincoln Highway adventures will resume tomorrow, Monday. This week: a history of hos the road got started, using Donald Davidson, the historian at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, sharing fascinating vignettes about Carl Fisher, who founded both the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Linciln Highway. He decided there needed to be a road that ran all the way across the country, all 3,700 miles or so. Then I heard from a woman in Kearney who has the actual 1916 Lincoln Highway official tour book. People had to camp. There were no motels; camogrounds were few, although eventually, tourist camps sprung up along the way. If it rained, mud kept cars off the road.Fascinating!
